Romania face Fifa expulsion over Universitatea Craiova case
By Luis Mira
Jul 13, 2012 1:30:00 AM
The Romanian federation is in hot water with the governing body for world football after it was ruled that the exclusion of the Craiova-based club was illegal
Romania could be expelled from Fifa as a consequence of Universitatea Craiova being disaffiliated with the country's governing body.On Thursday morning, the Romanian Football Federation (FRF) received a letter from the world football governing body, warning that its clubs, as well as the country's national team, are in danger of being excluded from all international competitions.
Universitatea Craiova were in May excluded from the FRF after they refused to withdraw their legal claim against former coach Victor Piturca from a civil court.
According to the federation's statute, it is empowered to solve all sports lawsuits, so it deemed the club's action illegal and excluded it without consulting with Fifa beforehand.
The governing body for world football has indicated that FRF will now face disciplinary action for its own illegal conduct, with the federation's temporary expulsion being under consideration.
"Sure we could be excluded," FRF president Mircea Sandu told DigiSport: "It could be for a month or two, three, I do not know, the civil courts must still revise their decisions.
"I am going to ask the Ministry of Justice and the magistrate to find some common ground. If necessary, I will turn to European courts."
Romania have been drawn in Group D in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, together with Netherlands, Turkey, Hungary, Estonia and Andorra.
Rapid Bucharest are due to play the first leg of their Europa League second qualifying round against finnish side MYPA on July 19.
Both Steaua Bucharest and Dinamo Bucharest will have to play in the Europa League third qualifying round and play-off round, respectively, while CFR Cluj and Vaslui have qualified for the same stage of the Champions League.
