thumbnail Hello,

The former Holland international feels that the Twente star does not warrant an invitation to the World Cup finalists' national side

Former Netherlands star Jaap Stam has voiced his opinion that Twente defender Douglas should not appear for the Oranje as he feels the Brazil-born centre-back is not a real Dutchman.

The 23-year-old recently gained Dutch nationality after spending over four years in Holland and national team coach Bert van Marwijk is known to be a keen admirer of the defender.

However, Stam would rather not see Douglas break into Holland's national team.

"I think he's a good player. We've spoken a few times and he seems like a nice guy, but if it was up to me, he wouldn't get a call-up for the Dutch national side," Stam was quoted as saying by Voetbal International.

"I might be a bit conservative on matters like this, but I don't see him as a real Dutchman. Additionally, he's not much better than defenders like Joris Mathijsen and John Heitinga.

"I'm not a big fan of naturalisation procedures like this. Holland have plenty of promising youngsters coming through."

Douglas isn't available for Oranje just yet as Fifa rules dictate that a player must live in the country of his new nationality for five years before being eligible to represent them at international level.

The defender thus won't be available for Holland until September 2012, unless his request for dispensation gets granted by Fifa.
