James Beattie today completed a £3.5 million pound to Stoke City from Sheffield United, and one of his new team-mates is expecting him to make an instant impression.

Michael Tonge was a team-mate of the striker's at Bramall Lane last season, when Beattie netted 22 goals in the Championship, and the midfielder is backing his fellow former Blade to do the business in the Premier League with the Potters.

"He's a very good player and a natural, old-fashioned target man," Tonge remarked earlier.

"Beattie is really good in the air and has also scored more than 30 goals since the start of last season."

That aerial ability means that he will fit straight into the Stoke side, as Tony Pulis's men are renowned for their 'direct' approach. Beattie is also in form, having scored 12 times already this season for United.

Crucially, in terms of the hard work that lies ahead of Stoke over the coming months as they scrap for points, Beattie is a man who grafts for his team.

"He has that work ethic, but also that extra ability you need. He can also score you goals out of nowhere," Tonge continued.

Beattie signed a two and a half year deal, and is dying for another go at the Premier League, where he previously starred with Southampton and Everton.

"I've been brought up to score goals and am ready to give the Premier League another crack," the striker stated.

"Stoke have given me that opportunity and, hopefully, I can show the fans what I can do right away."

Meanwhile, Stoke manager Tony Pulis has confirmed that he will be looking to bring in further new faces at the Britannia, having signed winger Matthew Etherington last week in addition to Beattie.

"We're still looking for two or three more before the window closes," the Potters boss explained.
