Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has insisted that last year's Champions League finalists still hold the edge over arch-rivals Schalke.
The Gelsenkirchen side have closed the gap with BVB to one point in the Bundesliga table, but Watzke is in no doubt as to which of the Ruhr teams should be considered the better of the two.
"Dortmund hold the edge over Schalke both on the pitch and off the pitch," Watzke was quoted as saying by Bild.
"It's not just about the Bundesliga. Fact is that Dortmund have made the quarter-finals of the Champions League and are in the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal, too."
Nevertheless, Watzke has nothing but respect for BVB's regional rivals and has hailed Schalke's excellent youth academy.
"Schalke have developed incredibly well on the pitch in the past few years.
"And they are doing some great work with their youth academy. It's simply a class job they're doing."
First team regulars such as Julian Draxler, Max Meyer, Benedikt Howedes and Joel Matip all came through the ranks of the Schalke academy.
