thumbnail Hello,

The versatile defender is optimistic about his side's chances of triumphing in Brazil with die Mannschaft, not least because of his club's domestic dominance

Philipp Lahm believes that Bayern Munich's recent successes and fine form this term could prove to be beneficial for Germany at the World Cup.

The Nationalelf have not won a major competition since their Euro 1996 success, but the versatile full-back feels Joachim Low's men have a good chance of going all the way in Brazil as a significant part of the squad will come from the Allianz Arena.

"Bayern's winning mentality can rub off on Germany at the World Cup," Lahm told the official Fifa website.

"There are a lot of Bayern players in the Germany squad, although that's no guarantee that we're automatically going to win the next title.

"Plenty of other countries are going there with the same aim of winning the World Cup.

"It's been a long road to get this far with Bayern: we've played in three of the last four Champions League finals and only won it last year.

"It's a long and difficult path and you also need a little bit of luck on your side too."

Germany went close in the past three editions of the World Cup, as they made the semi-finals on each occasion, but Lahm is confident they have what it takes to go all the way this time around.

"Maybe we weren't ready to win them," he mused. "When I think back to the 2006 World Cup on home soil, we came close but nobody really expected us to get very far. We simply lost to a better team and Italy went on to win it.

"In 2010 a lot of people dropped out before the tournament, like our captain Michael Ballack, for example.

"We had a very young side that was playing in its first major tournament. We played well and managed to get to the last four, where we lost to Spain, who won the World Cup and went on to win the European Championship.

"We went close to making the final against big teams like that, but maybe there was a little something lacking. I think our team has matured from those defeats."

Germany will have to deal with Portugal, Ghana and USA in Group G in Brazil this summer.
