Not only did he bring in Mesut Ozil - who has been hugely impressive for Real Madrid and Germany - he showed his intent with the transfer fee paid, smashing Arsenal’s record to pieces by over €30 million.
Ozil signed for Madrid back in 2010 and leaves the Santiago Bernabeu with a Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana medal in his bag. Now he will hope he can lead Arsenal to their first trophy in over eight years.
Oliver Giroud has laid down a claim this season as the Gunners major goal threat in the league, scoring four goals in his first five games of this season. Despite Aaron Ramsey netting three goals against Fenerbahce over two legs, Arsenal’s midfield - including Santi Cazorla and Theo Walcott - haven’t contributed to the goal tally domestically yet.
This responsibility may lie with Ozil, who could fit in right behind Giroud in an attacking role. The German scored nine goals last season for Madrid, a feat Arsene Wenger will hope can be continued in the Premier League.
Only time will tell to see if Ozil settles in the English league quickly, but the bet of the German to score over 7.5 league goals with Coral at 10/11 (1.91) seems like a fantastic price. The pressure will be on Ozil to perform after his huge pricetag, but his style should suit the way the Gunners play, so expect him to be a main contributor from midfield for the north London side.
