The Germany international says that he and his fellow team-mates are "delighted" by the arrival of the 22-year-old midfielder from Barcelona

Bastian Schweinsteiger has backed Bayern Munich's decision to bring Thiago Alcantara to the Allianz Arena, claiming that the Spain international can become "one of the greats" of the game.

Many pundits have been left perplexed by the Bavarians' acquisition of the versatile attacking midfielder, particularly in light of the earlier signing of Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund.

However, coach Pep Guardiola implored his new employers to land a player he had worked with during his time at Barcelona. And Schweinsteiger, having trained with Thiago for the first time on Wednesday, now appreciates just why the former Blaugrana boss was so desperate to make the deal happen.

“He's a very, very gifted footballer, who has everything you need to become one of the greats," the Germany international told FCB.tv. “We’re delighted we've acquired a player of his quality.

“We still have to help him settle but I think it'll happen really quickly."

Meanwhile, on a personal level, Schweinsteiger was just happy to be back training after recovering from a heel injury.

“It was great to be playing with the team again and do a few of the exercises," the 28-year-old midfielder enthused. "I'm feeling very good. I need to feel more secure, but I've made a start."

Bayern paid a reported €20 million to sign Thiago from Barcelona, though that figure could rise to €25m.
