thumbnail Hello,

The Netherlands striker believes Borussia Monchengladbach could serve as an important stepping stone for his career and is hopeful of winning the European U21 championships

Luuk de Jong is hoping to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Klass-Jan Huntelaar and use his experience in the Bundesliga to kick on in his career.

De Jong joined Borussia Monchengladbach from Twente for €15 million last summer but has failed to take Germany's top flight by storm following an inconsistent campaign.

However, the 22-year-old is confident he can progress as a player with his current side as he pursues a career in the highest echelons of European football.

When asked about his move to Gladbach, he told Uefa.com: "I'm happy I could take this step as a player, because you always want to move up, and the Bundesliga is a great place to develop as a player.

"I hope I can do well here, both for myself and for the club, and perhaps I can make another step in the future. That's another dream. I hope that things go well, and you never know what can happen."

De Jong is set to join up with the Netherlands Under-21 side for this summer's European Championship and he is hopeful his side can go all the way in Israel, just as Huntelaar managed in the same tournament in 2006.

"Every youth tournament, for every player, is an experience in itself," he continued. "You can learn a lot by playing against your own age group.

"These are the best players in Europe and that'll be a great experience. I have played for the senior team as well, which is another step higher, and you learn a lot from that. But here me and some other guys who also played in the senior team already, we all need to show we deserve to be part of this team.

"If you win the tournament… that's the thing you are hoping for. Perhaps with the qualities we have we might be able to reach that, but you have to adjust as a team first. You have to approach each game in a focused manner and fight for each other all the way - then you might have a chance."
