The 24-year-old midfielder left BVB for Real Madrid in the summer of 2011, but returned to the Bundesliga champions earlier this month after failing to secure regular first team action at the Santiago Bernabeu side and an unsuccessful loan spell at Liverpool this season.
"I was really nervous ahead of the match against Mainz. That's pretty unusual for me to be honest," Sahin told Bild.
"It reminded me a bit of my official debut for Dortmund at the age of 16. All the nerves were gone after about five minutes or so, though."
Sahin featured for the full 45 minutes as Dortmund beat Mainz 5-4 (1-1) after penalties.
Dortmund resume Bundesliga action on January 19 when they travel to Werder Bremen.
