Sammer: German dominance in group stage no reason for euphoria

The sporting director believes that the Bundesliga sides' success so far in Europe's elite tournament should not hyped up and that the clubs should keep their feet on the ground

Bayern Munich's Matthias Sammer is of the opinion that German teams' achievements in this season's Champions League are no reason for euphoria and insisted that there is still work to be done.

For the first time in the history of Europe's elite tournament three Bundesliga teams qualified for the knockout stage as group winners, and the sporting director believes the public is putting too much stock into this success.

"I am delighted for German football, but what is our claim? That we survived the first round with three German teams? Now it really begins," he told Spox.

"I am surprised we celebrate that similar to things like winning the title. We expected it to happen so all is in order up to this point, but we shall be humble and consider it as normal."

Sammer then commented on Jerome Boateng's dismissal in the game against BATE, which could see the player miss up to three matches in Europe for the Bavarians.

"It was harsh. Each morning I meet with Uefa and the referees and always hear about respect.

"On the other hand I have to say that Jerome does not have to go in the way he did. Nevertheless, this is no way a red card."
