The Bavarians finished runners-up in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the Champions League last term, but have won all but one of their competitive matches to date this campaign.
The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Mario Mandzukic and Dante all arrived over the summer in a bid to boost the side's fortunes, but in Sammer's eyes it is the 67-year-old who must be applauded for their form.
"The situation that we find ourselves in now is thanks to the absolute hard work of Jupp Heynckes," he told Sport 1.
"He is incredibly clear in his communication within the club and the team. He is clear in his areas of responsibility and what he asks of the players.
"It is an honour for me and a joy to experience [this club]. When I talk with our coach, I admire his composure and his football expertise. It is a great pleasure for me to work for Bayern Munich on a daily basis."
The former Germany midfielder also gave an update on the condition of crocked winger Arjen Robben, who has missed the past month due to a thigh injury.
"For now, we must now rest him a bit," he added. "I am optimistic that his recovery can be accomplished in a reasonable time frame."
