Bierhoff: Germany have been lacking something to win titles
The former striker declared that he does not know why Die Mannschaft have fallen short when competing for international honours, but that they must learn from it quickly
Oliver Bierhoff has admitted that Germany have been missing something when it comes to triumphing in major international tournaments, but insisted that their previous experiences will hold them in good stead.Die Mannschaft were eliminated at the semi-final stage at Euro 2012 in June but have reached at least the same stage in every tournament since World Cup 2006.
But the man who scored the winning goal the last time Germany won a major title, at Euro 1996, affirmed that the current crop of players will benefit from previous shortcomings as they begin their qualifying campaign for the next World Cup in Brazil.
"There was something lacking in recent years to win the title, and we have got to take what we have learnt from that into the next two years," Bierhoff said in a press conference.
"The Faroes [Faroe Islands] are certainly not going to be our toughest test, but they are good opponents for us to start our qualifying campaign against. Everybody is expecting that we will win our group and that is our aim too.
"Sweden and [Republic of] Ireland were both at Euro 2012 and they have studied us over the years and are awkward to play against. It is a tough group."
Germany will be at full strength for the forthcoming double header which they begin by hosting the Faroe Islands in Hannover on Friday.
