Holtby casts doubt on his Schalke future
The young midfielder cannot wait to play at the highest level during the next season but has hinted that his future may lie away from the Ruhr club
Lewis Holtby is eager to play in the Champions League with Schalke during the next season but has suggested that his long-term future may be elsewhere. The Erkelenz-born midfielder made 27 appearances as the Gelsenkirchen side secured a place in European football's top continental tournament with a third-placed Bundesliga finish last term. Now the 21-year-old is itching to feature on the stage for the first time in his career.
"I want to play the new season at Champions League level," Holtby said in an interview with Kicker.
"I'm healthy, I feel physically very well and I am developing real enthusiasm. I am a young player and I do not need four weeks of rest, as my head would go crazy."
Holtby, who has previously spoken of his desire to play in the Premier League, admitted that he is in negotiations over a new contract but is yet to commit his future to the Bundesliga outfit, hinting that he may not commit to the club for more than another year.
"Discussions are in progress, I cannot say more. I will stay at Schalke for at least another year."
