Howedes ready to give 'another ten per cent' for Schalke
Three weeks before the start of the new Bundesliga season, Die Knappen's captain has spoken about how he believes he must put in more effort for the club in the upcoming campaign
Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes has acknowledged that he must try harder for the club this season. The 24-year-old wishes to remain captain of the Royal Blues, despite being plagued by a succession of injuries during the last Bundesliga campaign that limited him to just 22 league appearances.
After missing numerous games last season, Howedes has recognised that he must give a little more for the team in order to earn his place and the captain's armband.
In an interview with Bild, Howedes said: "I have to give another ten per cent.
"The coach [Huub Stevens] is right that I should give ten per cent more."
The Germany international has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Bayern Munich at various points throughout the summer, but looks set to stay in Gelsenkirchen, as they look to build on their third-placed finish in the Bundesliga last season.
Schalke kick the new league season off against Hannover on August 26.
