The 20-year-old has decided to try his luck in the Bundesliga a second time after enduring a frustrating loan spell at Bayern Munich last season, where he made just five appearances.
Usami refused to return to parent club Gamba Osaka at the end of 2011-12, and he remains positive that he will be finally able to make his mark on German football in his sophomore spell.
"I will help ensure that we achieve our goal: the Europa League," Usami told Kicker. "I want to be a first team regular, I need to work for that.
"I feel that Markus Babbel relies on me. He likes my style of play, and he sees me playing on the left.
"I am looking forward to playing at the Olympic Games. A disadvantage in the race for a starting place? I do not think so."
