Nurnberg's Raphael Schafer out for three months - sporting director Martin Bader

The skipper went under the knife and is set to miss the majority of the first half of the Bundesliga season

Nurnberg coach Dieter Hecking has received some disturbing news from the treatment table after being informed that his club captain and No.1 goalkeeper Raphael Schafer will be out for almost three months.

The extent of the injury was revealed by club sporting director Martin Bader, who confirmed the 32-year old was diagnosed with a hamstring problem that will require an operation.

"He [Schafer] will be out for 10 to 12 weeks, then we expect him to be back with the team," Bader told Bild.

Bader expressed his concern over the goalkeeper's absence due to the lack of experience within the remaining Nurnberg players.

"We will not only miss his goalkeeping quality, but also his team leadership," he added.

Schafer played almost his entire career at Nurnberg since 2001, with the exception of the 2007-08 season, which he spent at Stuttgart. The custodian has over 200 Bundesliga appearances under his belt.
