The Royal Blues defeated Duisburg 5-0 in the final of the DFB Pokal on Saturday evening to gain an automatic spot in next season’s Europa League, and decided to celebrate their success with their supporters today.
However, Neuer, who looks likely to leave Schalke and join Bayern Munich in the summer, was met with hostility when he was attacked by a supporter of the club. Pretending to want to hug the Germany international goalkeeper, the fan slapped him in response to his decision not to renew his contract with the Champions League semi-finalists.
Neuer’s current contract with Schalke is due to expire at the end of the 2011-12 campaign but the 25-year-old has turned down offers of a new deal. Bayern Munich have been heavily linked with the player and there are confirmed reports that negotiations between the two clubs have begun, even though Neuer himself has refused to say anything on this.
"My answer is clear. I do not have any idea [whether I will go to Bayern Munich]. Those who are responsible for everything know," he told Sky Deutschland after last night’s victory. "I cannot say when so little has been reported because I am not in a position to do so. I don't have all the information. I must wait."
Neuer has been criticised by some Schalke reporters for his refusal to commit his future to the club but he has vehemently denied allegations of being a traitor to his hometown team.
