thumbnail Hello,

Former Danish great was impressed by the German and believes he would find it hard to turn down overtures from Old Trafford should Sir Alex Ferguson make a bid this summer

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has praised the performance of Schalke’s Manuel Neuer after the German’s performance in Tuesday night’s Champions League defeat at the hands of United.

The 25-year-old kept the Red Devils at bay until well into the second half and Schmeichel has heaped praise on the keeper, and believes he would find it difficult to turn down a move to United if an offer was made this summer.

"He is probably the best goalkeeper in the world," he told Sky Sports News. "He has been captain of that team [Schalke] for a number of years. He is very, very mature in the way he plays; he doesn't make many mistakes.”

With Edwin van der Sar retiring at the end of this season, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is on the lookout for a new goakeeper and the Dane thinks that Neuer, who has announced his intention to leave Schalke this summer, would be the ideal replacement.

And Schmeichel thinks that if Ferguson comes calling, he would have to give the offer serious consideration.

“If Sir Alex says 'listen I want you to play for my team' it's very difficult not to say yes,” he said.

“He [Neuer] saw what Manchester United are capable of first hand yesterday and he has to go to Old Trafford next Tuesday. He will have an experience there of, for me, one of the best grounds in the world.”

Manchester United won Tuesday’s encounter 2-0 and are now comfortable favourites to reach the final at Wembley in May.
