Spanish veteran joined Schalke from Real Madrid in the summer of 2010, but Manchester United attempted to hijack the Royal Blues' move

Experienced attacker Raul decided to leave Real Madrid for Schalke in the summer of 2010, but defender Christoph Metzelder has revealed that the former Spain international also had the chance to join Manchester United.

"They [Manchester United] tried to sign him [Raul] this season. He talked to me about it. I don't know if he thought about it," Metzelder was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail.

Metzelder then went on to say that he did his utmost to convince Raul to move to Germany.

"A player like him has offers from clubs in the United States, England but also Schalke. I tried to convince him. He got to know Germany in the 2006 World Cup and knows the atmosphere, the stadiums, the infrastructure. I said to him, 'You have to experience it'. He's a big player and his influence is great."

The centre-back finished by discussing the upcoming Champions League semi-finals and expressed his pride at reaching the final four.

"This is a big day for us, the only German club to be left in the Champions League, with three of the biggest clubs in the world. It's only Raul who has played finals - the rest of us just watch them on television."
