thumbnail Hello,

Lothar Matthaeus will not become the next 1860 Munich coach, club president Dieter Schneider revealed.

1860 Munich president Dieter Schneider has dismissed rumours that Bulgaria coach Lothar Matthaeus could soon take over at his club.

When Abendzeitung asked about Matthaeus as a potential coaching option, Schneider replied sarcastically, "That's right. Were about to have talks. However, when we learned that [Bayern Munich coach] Louis van Gaal could be available, we were not sure. Why not try to sign Van Gaal?"

Schneider finally admitted that the rumours "Are not true."

Yesterday, a report from TZ quoted Matthaeus as having said, "I would like to coach at 1860."

He went so far as to suggest that he could coach the financially struggling side free of charge,  however, following Schneider's quotes, it appears that 1860 are not interested in acquiring his services.

Matthaeus is regarded as a legend in Germany, but has yet to land a coaching position in his homeland. Since his professional retirement in 2000, he has enjoyed stints in charge at the likes of Rapid Wien, Atletico Paranaense, and Red Bull Salzburg, as well as the Hungarian national side, before arriving in Bulgaria.
