Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen have received some disturbing news on the injury front in the build-up to the highly anticipated league clash against reigning German champions Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf will have to make do without the services of highly rated defender Per Mertesacker for the next four to six weeks.

The towering centre-back picked up a facial injury after an elbow from Vagif Javadov in the opening minutes of Germany's Euro 2012 qualifier against Azerbaijan on Tuesday and had to leave the pitch after only 11 minutes of play due to the knock.

Mertesacker was taken to the hospital immediately after being substituted and a scan revealed that the defender has fractured the orbital floor below his left eye. Earlier today, a report on the official website of the German FA stated that Mertesacker will not need surgery. Later in the day, a report from Bild revealed that upon further testing, it was determined that the centre half would miss four to six weeks.

Germany eventually cruised to a comfortable 6-1 win against Azerbaijan after Mertesacker's substitution.
