Bayern Munich are making no attempts to play down their weekend Bundesliga clash against Schalke, with CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge even indicating that this game will take precedence over the club’s Champions League quarter-final encounter with Manchester United next Wednesday.

FCB travel to Bundesliga leaders Schalke on Saturday afternoon needing three points to regain their status as table-toppers, though defeat would deal a terrific blow to the Bavarians’ aspirations of reclaiming the German crown. Meanwhile, Bayern boast a 2-1 lead going into their second leg encounter against the Red Devils.

If Rummenigge had to pick one battle to win, it would not be the one at Old Trafford.

“This will be the key game of the season and we want to survive,” he told Kicker. “I'm much hotter on Schalke than on the return leg against Manchester United. We will give everything.”

The players of die Roten seem to be equally motivated, with Mario Gomez stating: “We have to win.”

Going into the weekend’s fixtures, Bayern trail die Koenigsblauen with only six rounds of action remaining.
