Bayer Leverkusen were crowned Bundesliga winter champions this weekend for the second time in their history following a 3-2 win against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Young playmaker Toni Kroos, currently on loan from Bayern Munich, netted a brace to help his side to the full three points and has been instrumental in the Werkself's success so far this term.

The 19-year-old's outstanding performances this campaign didn't go unnoticed in Munich and Kroos will return to FCB in the summer of 2010.

Franz Beckenbauer, former president of the Bavarians, was full of praise for the youngster following his superb first half of the season.

"Toni Kroos has been the man of the season so far. I've always had the feeling that he could be the next Michael Ballack and he's certainly living up the expectations," said Beckenbauer to Bild.

"I wouldn't be really surprised if [Germany coach] Joachim Loew takes him to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa."
