Koeln 0-0 Werder Bremen

Koeln and Werder Bremen played a goalless draw on a rainy afternoon in the Rhineland. The home side were rather defensive in the first half before dropping even further back after the break and proved impossible to beat. Lenient refereeing saw Koeln commit 32 fouls but earn just three yellow cards and Bremen were forced to settle for a draw.

Schalke 2-0 Hertha Berlin

Schalke earned the better opportunities in the first half but entered the halftime break scoreless. Kevin Kuranyi broke the deadlock with a 59th minute header and after Christoph Janker's sending off in the 86th minute, any hopes of equalizing for Hertha flew out of the window. Rafinha added a second goal late after Vicente Sanchez drew a penalty and Schalke advanced to third place.
