Matthieu Delpierre Replaces Thomas Hitzlsperger As Stuttgart Captain
Head coach Markus Babbel has named a new skipper at Stuttgart...
Stuttgart hoach Markus Babbel has stripped midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger of the VfB captaincy and has handed French defender Matthieu Delpierre the armband.
"The captain's armband has recently prevented Thomas Hitzlsperger from performing at the level that he is capable of and so I made the decision to relieve Thomas of the captaincy," said Babbel on the official Stuttgart website.
"I did so to help him out of this difficult situation. I need him on the pitch! He needs to concentrate completely on getting back to his best form, but I'm not going to allow him to be made the scapegoat for the current situation due to the measure I have taken."
Delpierre moved to Stuttgart from Lille in 2004. The Frenchman has made a total of 128 appearances in the jersey with the red chest ring so far.
"Although this decision came as a bit of a surprise to me, I was absolutely delighted. It's a great honour for me to be captain of VfB Stuttgart," said Delpierre.
