Brief Layoff For Bayer Leverkusen Goalkeeper Rene Adler
The German international has inflammation of the eye and will be out of action for a couple of days. Teenager Fabian Giefer is therefore poised to make his league debut...
Bayer Leverkusen head coach Jupp Heynckes will have to make do without first choice shot stopper Rene Adler when the Werkself lock horns with Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend.
Two eye specialists saw Adler on Thursday after the highly-rated goalkeeper complained about eye problems. Both explained that he has an inflammation of the eye and must sit out Friday's game.
As reserve 'keeper Benedikt Fernandez is still in rehabilitation training after a meniscus operation, 19-year-old Fabian Giefer will step into the breach. This will be his Bundesliga debut.
"Eike Immel played against Bayern [Munich] when he was 17-years-old and there are many other similar examples,” Jupp Heynckes declared on the club's official website. "I have every confidence in Fabian. He’s worked hard to get his chance and now it’s up to him to grab it by the scruff of the neck. We’ll give him our full support."
