Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart have backed coach Markus Babbel, despite an abject start to the campaign.

The Schwaben have yet to recapture the form that led them to third spot in the league table last term. Stuttgart are 14th in the Bundesliga at the moment and were eliminated in the DFB Pokal by second flight side Greuther Furth.

However, the board are still confident that Babbel has what it takes to turn things around and have made it clear that they're not considering offloading the young coach.

"The Board of Management sat down together with the complete coaching team for a long time and together we analysed the current situation," sporting director Horst Heldt told a press conference. "During our talks, Markus Babbel and his team gave us the very clear impression that they are capable of mastering the crisis. The trainer is not totally stumped - quite the opposite! They are full of hope and have shown us ways in which they plan to guide the team out of the current crisis.

"We need to form a collective unit now, and not just on the pitch. The important thing now is to quickly get some positive results. We are doing everything possible to achieve that. It must be very clear to the players that right now we are deep in the relegation battle and I expect them to display the necessary virtues to get back out of that particular situation."
