Bixente Lizarazu Expects Bordeaux-Bayern Munich To Be A Close Encounter
The former French international hints that he thinks Wednesday night's game may end level, refusing to be drawn into making a prediction...
French champions Girondins de Bordeaux are due to lock horns with German powerhouse Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and former French international Bixente Lizarazu, who played at both sides, expects a tight match.
"Bayern are not on peak form right now. They have a strong team with great forwards, but they’re either injured, off form or lacking confidence. Sixth in the table isn’t where Bayern ought to be," Lizarazu told the Germans' official website.
"Bordeaux are champions, with a stable and balanced team and few weaknesses. They’ve just lost twice in the league, but otherwise made a good start. It’ll be an interesting game between two well-matched teams.
"It’s Bayern’s big chance - they know the situation well and will want to give a better account of themselves than in the Bundesliga recently. But I still say Bayern aren’t in great shape. They can improve, and they have to improve. But there’s huge potential, especially when [Franck] Ribery and [Arjen] Robben are fit, and [Miroslav] Klose, [Luca] Toni and [Mario] Gomez start scoring.
"Bordeaux will respect Bayern, but they’ll play like they did away to Juventus, where they performed really well and took a point.
"Taking both teams’ current form into account, I’m saying it’ll be a very close game. It’ll be a different Bayern compared to the Bundesliga, but Girondins will want to show that their back-to-back league defeats were slip-ups. I’m not going to try and predict the score."
