Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen met Hoffenheim on Saturday and eventually recorded a 2-0 win. Things did not go easy for the Hanseaten though, as Hoffenheim got the perfect opportunity to pick up the lead. However, Carlos Eduardo missed a spot kick and Werder dominated the game from there on.

"We needed a certain amount of time to get into the game and the penalty was the starting point. After that we got rolling and were surer of ourselves after the two goals," said head coach Thomas Schaaf at the after-match press conference.

"All told, I saw a very good game from my team in which we did not give up very much defensively. And when things got tight, there was always someone there to clear it up."

Defender Per Mertesacker was particularly happy with the performance of Werder's back-line.

"I think we did a good job stopping the deadly passes of Carlos Eduardo. We wanted to make sure that we keep on course. In the past few years our defence hasn’t exactly been brilliant," was Mertesacker quoted as saying.
