Orlando Engelaar is surplus to requirements at Gelsenkirchen outfit Schalke and the Bundesliga side appear to be set to offload the 29-year-old, with Greek giants Panathinaikos reportedly giving chase.

Engelaar has already been linked with Dutch titans PSV and Ajax, but Pana are now reportedly sitting in pole position to secure the midfielder's services.

"The transfer isn't a done deal yet. However, I expect us to reach an agreement with Panathinaikos in the upcoming days," Schalke chairman Josef Schnusenberg told Kicker.

Engelaar signed for Schalke from Twente in the summer of 2008, but the Dutch international has failed to live up to expectations since. He has made 25 league appearances for Schalke, getting two red cards in the process.
