RUMOURS: Van Gaal considers stepping down at end of season

The former Ajax, Netherlands and Barcelona coach is under pressure at Old Trafford and could walk away from the job this summer - a year before his contract expires

Louis Van Gaal is ready to cut short his spell at Manchester United one year before his contract ends by leaving the club in the summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Dutchman took over from David Moyes ahead of the 2014-15 season but despite delivering Champions League football in his first year in charge, he has come in for criticism over the perception of his team as defensive and uninspiring.

The Mirror cites sources in the Netherlands that assert the pressure is taking a toll on Van Gaal's family life, which could prompt him to walk away from Old Trafford at the end of the current campaign.

Van Gaal has previously stated that United would be his last managerial job and that on leaving the club he would retire from football.
