Perak FA overcame a resilient Terengganu FA side courtesy of a Michal Kubala piledriver at the Perak Stadium on Tuesday.
The Slovakian midfielder scored in the 75th minute as Norizan Abu Bakar's men held on for a priceless victory against Terengganu.
The Seladangs named a relatively strong squad against favourites Terengganu, who had the likes of Joseph Kalang Tie and Abdul Hadi Yahya on their side. However, it was Perak who showed plenty of endeavour right from the opening whistle.
Birthday boy Lazar Popovic had a glorious chance to give his side the lead in the first minute but his scuffed shot went wide of the post. Terengganu struggled to pick up the pace and could not generate much on the offensive side.
Kubala shot straight at Sharbinee Alawee in the 19th minute before Joseph Kalang curled a free kick wide in the 29th minute. Akhmal Rizal Rakhli then had a great chance to give Perak the lead just before the break, but his close-range shot flew over the bar as the score remained tied at half-time.
The tempo of the match picked up in the second half with the home side showing more urgency. Kubala was a key figure as he drafted out a couple of opportunities for Noor Hazrul and Popovic, but both squandered the chances.
Cikgu Jan's men finally got their deserved breakthrough in the 75th minute as Kubala showed great accuracy by hitting top corner with a powerful long range shot, leaving Sharbinee helpless. It was a well-deserved goal for the Slovakian, who looked menacing throughout the match.
From then on Perak brilliantly hung on for an excellent start to their Super League season.
