The 2012 Malaysian Super League is upon us and the Goal team analyses the first round of matches! Upsets and struggles are abound, while the new boys, especially LionsXII will take centre-stage.
Negeri Sembilan are fresh from their Charity Shield success and will face Selangor in a confident mode. The Klang Valley giants have appointed Irfan Bakti to revive the fortunes of the club and based on their signings so far, they are definitely a force to be reckoned with. However, if Negeri can portray the form that they displayed against Kelantan in the Charity Shield match last Saturday, expect them to shine impeccably at home on Tuesday night.
Despite playing away from home, Terengganu will go into this match as the imminent favourites. The Turtles are better matched on paper and will look to carry on after an impressive 2011 that saw them finish second behind Kelantan in the league. However, Perak will be more than just pushovers with backing from their fanatic fans. Lazar Popovic in particular will be a handful for the Terengganu defence but on an overall note, it will be an entertaining match with both sides sharing the spoils.
The Lions are back in the Malaysian league fold after an 18 year hiatus and they will be eager to kick off their Super League season in style. However, facing the defending champions Kelantan will not be an easy task. The Red Warriors were shambolic in their Charity Shield defeat to Negeri Sembilan last Saturday and will be looking to bounce back immediately. However, the artificial turf and a sell-out home attendance could prove to be tricky for the Kelantan players. Considering the amount of travelling they have done in recent days, it’s fair to say that a draw should be expected from this feisty encounter at Jalan Besar Stadium.
This particular match could be an interesting one. Felda United were a breath of fresh air in the Super League last season and the free-flowing brand of football will be adopted again by coach Elavarasan. However, Sabah have invested massively during the transfer window, bringing in A-League players Brendan Gan and Michael Baird. Both will be expect to shine impeccably tomorrow. Nonetheless, Felda themselves have acquired a few talented youngsters and with home support tomorrow, they are definitely favourites to edge out with a victory.
Under the guidance of Robert Alberts, Sarawak were a formidable squad in the Premier League last year and they will look to replicate that form again. Several interesting moves have been made, with Guy Bwelle and Kalle Sone joining in as their foreign signings. Kuala Lumpur meanwhile are already being regarded as early candidates for relegation due to their financial crisis. On paper, they have a relatively weak squad, particularly in defence. Therefore, it’s safe to predict a victory for Sarawak with talisman Zamri Morshidi being the catalyst upfront.
Starting off as a feeder club for Terengganu FA, T-Team have grown by leaps and bounds in three years and expectations will be a lot higher this season as well. Former Perlis talisman Zachariah Simukonda has been drafted into the T-Team squad and is expected to lead the line on Tuesday. Kedah meanwhile, have the youngest squad in the Super League this year, but make no mistake about their credibility. With players like Baddrol Bakthiar and Khyril Muhymeen on board, they will give T-Team a run for their money at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah stadium.
PKNS FC were absolutely impressive in the Premier League last year, finishing as champions. They will make their long awaited return into the top-flight against Johor FC, a club that has largely been revamped over the last two months or so. Rudie Ramli is expected to lead the line for PKNS on Tuesday although Johor will be the favourites for this one. PKNS will be hoping for a draw from this match but if Haris, Syahrizal and Eddy hit top gear, then things will get too delicate for PKNS.
