Sydney FC's new Socceroo signing Brett Emerton says he'd love to be involved in the club's A-League opener against Melbourne Victory despite two Australia fixtures being sandwiched around the clash.
The Sky Blues are due to take on Harry Kewell's Victory in a huge opening round game on October 8, however Australia are also scheduled to face Malaysia in a friendly on October 7 before a World Cup qualifier against Oman on October 11.
The Sydney-Melbourne clash is being billed as a huge occasion for the A-League and if the Socceroos duo were forced out it would be a major disappointment for the competition.
Speaking at his first training session with his new Sydney FC team-mates, the former Blackburn midfielder told reporters he'd love to face the Victory but said it wasn't down to him.
“Thankfully the decision about whether I can play or not is not mine to make and I’ll wait to see what happens," Emerton said.
"I have always said I love for playing for the national team and that hasn’t changed. We’ll wait and see but I’d love to play in the (Sydney FC v Melbourne Victory) match.”
Emerton added: "Obviously there's been a lot made of it, it's not just about me and Harry. It's about the two teams and I'm not looking at it that way, me versus him."
Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka said he hoped Emerton could be involved for the good of the A-League.
“I think it would be very good for Sydney FC and also for football fans in the A-League if the two stars, Brett and Harry, who have come home to play in the A-League can play against each other in the first match," Lavicka said.
“I have been a national coach before and I respect it is Holger’s decision and it is difficult to keep clubs and the national team both happy.”
Emerton, 32, also said he was leaving it down to Lavicka to decide where to play him, rather than call the shots on his best position.
"I've had a brief chat to him and it's all about where he wants me to play, not about me telling him. I would just fit in wherever he thinks I'm best suited in this team," he said.
