Indonesia sack national team boss Alfred Riedl
By Ben Somerford
Jul 14, 2011 3:45:00 AM
After changes at the Indonesian Football Association over the weekend, the new head has decided to sack the national team coach with 10 days before their first World Cup qualifier
The newly-appointed head of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Djohar Arifin Husin has sacked the country's national team manager Alfred Riedl. The 61-year-old former Austria coach had guided Indonesia to second place in last December's AFF Suzuki Cup.
However, after Husin was elected to the position of PSSI head over the weekend he has opted for change with less than a fortnight before Indonesia's 2014 Fifa World Cup qualification campaign begins away to Turkmenistan.
"Yes it's official. The newly-appointed head has fired Alfred Riedl today," PSSI spokesman Tubagus Adhi told AFP.
"It's the right of the chairman to fire the coach. Maybe he was seen as incapable of accelerating the improvement of the national team."
Husin has placed PSM Makassar coach Wilhelmus Rijsbergen in interim charge of the national team.
