Australia captain Lucas Neill has said that compatriot Mark Schwarzer deserved a move to Arsenal in the transfer window.

The Fulham shot stopper was strongly linked with a move to the Emirates throughout the summer before new Cottagers manager Mark Hughes blocked his “dream move”.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger made perfectly clear he wanted to sign a goalkeeper during the summer window. Two bids in the region of £2 million for Schwarzer were both rejected as he made him his main target.

Now, former Blackburn Rovers, Everton and West Ham United defender Neill has revealed his national team-mate’s performances warranted a switch to north London.

"He is the ultimate professional," Neill was quoted as saying by skysports.com.

"He deserved to go to a club like Arsenal."

Schwarzer is said to have been extremely frustrated with the situation, and is thankful for the international break to take his mind away from domestic issues.

He said: "At the end of the day you have to get on with your work and coming away with the national team was a great relief for me really."

He was reluctant to comment publicly on the situation however, for fear of saying something untoward.

"I would rather not say anything," he said. "I would really rather not say anything because otherwise I might say something wrong."

Schwarzer will now have to wait until January if he is to complete a switch to Arsenal, but Neill believes this will not be detrimental for the 37-year-old.

"He will thrive under Mark Hughes at Fulham," he said.
