Malaysia League Wrap: Selangor Sizzling At The Top
Kedah embarrassed In Shah Alam...
By Khairi Rizal, Shamim Imran & Izan Suleiman
Selangor breezed through what many thought would be their biggest test yet at home as third placed Kedah were scattered to four horizons by another magical display by the Red Giants in Shah Alam.
A 10th minute header from Syafiq Rahim that was cleared off the line set the tone early on for the game and the Red Giants opened the scoring 15 minutes later as Safee Sali fired Selangor into the lead.
K. Devan's central midfield pairing of Bunyamin Umar and Hardi, with Amirulhadi Zainal and Amri Yahyah ghosting almost effortlessly on the flanks easily overwhelmed the lone ball winner of Kedah's Shahrulnizam Mustapha. The home side broke through again in the 38th minute with Amirulhadi exchanging a sweet one-two with Hardi inside the box before arrowing away to plant a low diagonal shot into the net for Selangor's second goal of the game.
A whiff of a fightback came with Azmi Muslim's 57th minute cross from the right narrowly missing substitute Faizal Abu Bakar's head at near post, but three minutes later, Selangor put the result beyond doubt. Amirulhadi's cross from a counterattack found captain and Man of The Match Amri Yahya who headed the ball into past the helpless 'keeper.
The Red Giants were not done just yet as substitute D.Surendran found Amirulhadi already waiting on the penalty spot, who teed it up before volleying into the net.
NEGERI SEMBILAN 3-2 PERLIS
A five-goal thriller in the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi ended with Malaysia Cup holders Negeri Sembilan coming out on top.
Veteran midfielder placed the Deers in control after 25 minutes, but the Northern Lions responded quickly, levelling the scores at one a price through Wan Khairul, 12 minutes later. Experienced centre-back, Shukor Adan got Negeri’s noses in front three minutes before the break, but K. Soley, marked his progressive return to Nidzam Adzha’s line-up, with Perlis’ equaliser for the second time in the match, five minutes into the second period.
Youngster Asyraf Al Japri then took matters in his own hands, notching his debut Super League strike, in the 55th minute, and the northerners simply had no more bullets in their arsenal to counter that, allowing Wan Jamak’s side to claim victory for the third time this season, while jumping over Perlis to occupy seventh spot, tied on 11 points each, but having a match in hand.
KUALA LUMPUR 2-1 JOHOR
City Boys, Kuala Lumpur made life difficult for themselves against basement team Johor, needing a late Azidan Sarudin winner, nine minutes from time, to secure their first home win of the season.
Razip Ismail’s charges got off to a brilliant start when Yong Kuong Yong third goal of the season after only seven minutes of play, got them in front from their first real attempt to attack the Johor goal.
However, the opener failed to inspire the Hawks to press on their advantage, and Johor grew bolder in looking for the equaliser, forcing the home side to backpedal on a number of occasions.
After the break in what must have been a hairdryer session from their coach, KL came out of their shell and began to impose their attacking play, but were unlucky not to have scored a second goal to kill the tie. Instead, it was the Scorpions who stung them against the run of play from a quick counterattack that caught the entire KL defence napping, ending with L. Rajesh making it 1-1 with 20 minutes remaining.
Johor were heading for only their second point of the season until a tragic giveaway inside their own half, provided skipper Azidan with the chance to pick his spot and he fired an unstoppable strike from distance for KL to steal the winner, condemning their opponents to sixth loss in the League, while they themselves move into ninth in the standings.
PLUS FC 0-1 TERENGGANU
Young Firdaus Fauzi’s 26th minute strike against PLUS FC in this away encounter, kept Terengganu in second place of the Super League charts, fending off a challenge for their position from Johor FC, who are only a point behind.
The Turtles remain in the hunt for the title, though they are five points off Selangor, but the Red Giants have played one more match more.
PLUS meanwhile should be set to press the panic button with regards to coach Mat Zan’s future, especially after a flurry of big purchases during the close season have failed to mould them into what many had billed earlier as title contenders.
Succumbing to their fifth loss in eight matches of the Super League while languishing in twelfth place in the standings does not augur well for a club whose budget simply dwarfs many of the state sides. To be lumped together with Penang and Johor, who have management issues, at the wrong end of the table, is definitely at embarrassing scenario considering the Highwaymen’s riches. What probably is keeping Mat Zan still at the helm is their run in the FA Cup.
PENANG 1-1 PERAK
Perak meanwhile were left kicking at their fate after letting Penang off the hook in their Northern derby clash, when they were forced to a share of the spoils in the 1-1 draw at Batu Kawan.
Considering the plight Penang are in at the moment, though Perak are not in any way much better, coach Raja Azlan had targeted to come home to Ipoh with all three points in hand.
It seemed going all to plan when Saufi Sa’aidi goal in the 62nd minute set the tone for victory over the Panthers. However, Mohamed Bakar’s men clawed back to fight for the draw, putting pressure of the Perakians late in the fixture, which resulted in a penalty that S. Veenod struck home to the glee of the few hundred home fans that evening.
T-TEAM FC 0-1 KELANTAN
B. Sathiananthan’s Kelantan continued their improvement in the Super League with a hard fought victory in this East Coast derby in front of a hostile crowd in Kuala Terengganu.
Azizi Mat Rose’s poached goal in the 73rd minute, reacting first to goalkeeper Syamsuri Mustaffa fumble, was the only strike that separated the two sides, while breaking the newly promoted outfit's impressive unbeaten record at home, prior to this game.
The win sees the Red Warriors move to fourth, only two points behind second placed Terengganu, while Che Ku Marzuki’s team drop to tenth in the standings.
JOHOR FC 2 PAHANG 1
Johor FC are also beginning to hit the right gears after a rocky start to this season’s Super League campaign, but they have steadied the ship to notch yet another victory, climbing into third at the expense of Kedah, in their bid for the title this year.
Once high flying Pahang, were their latest victims, though the Elephants did give a twist in the tale, late in the proceedings.
After a goalless first 45 minutes, the match came alive in the second period with the Ramlan Rashid’s southerners scoring twice in four minutes (62nd and 66th minute), through Irme Mat and skipper Wan Rohami, to instantly knock the stuffing out of Dollah Salleh’s boys.
However, the youngsters from Pahang were made from sterner stuff and pulled a goal back in the 76th minute from R. Karthigesu, to ensure dramatic end but it was not to be as they collapsed to their third defeat in four matches on their travels, a big contrast with their 100% home win form.
