Chongqing Lifan Sign Five New Players After Avoiding Relegation

Chongqing desperate not to waste lifeline…

By Rupert Fryer

Chongqing Lifan have signed five new players following news that they would not be relegated from the Chinese Super League.

Former Club Brugge striker Jose Duarte, 28-year-old Ivorian defender Mariko Daouda, Ugandan international Andrew Mwesigwa, Serbian striker Dusan Djokic  and former Ulsan Hyundai defender Cho Se-kwon have all joined the club, as confirmed by the Asian Football Confederation.

The dramatic influx follows a Chinese Football Association ruling that saw the club, who were relegated last season, thrown a lifeline following the match-fixing scandal that has engulfed Chinese football.

Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals and Chengdu Blades were relegated following the controversy, a move that saw Chongqing retain their CSL status.

Lifan chairman Yin Mingshan is desperate to avoid another disastrous season and is reported to have spent around $1.5 million.

“This figure is much more than what we spent last season as we are determined to remain in the top flight,” said Chongqing general manager Chen Hong.
