Asian Champions League Review: Changchun Hit Persipura For Nine
Changchun Yatai run riot while Griffiths braves the elements…

Group A
Esteghlal 0–0 Al-Jazira
Al-Gharafa 3–2 Al Ahli
Juninho Pernambucano’s Al-Garrafa took a stride towards their first ever appearance in the ACL second-round today thanks to a winner from another veteran Brazilian, former Cruzeiro striker Araujo. Mirghani Al Zain gave the hosts the lead in the fourth minute before Al-Ahli turned the game on its head. Soud Al Shammari then put the hosts level in the 79th minute, Araujo’s winner arrived just two minutes later. Garrafa captain and former Lyon star Juninho was sent off in injury time.
While Al-Jazira have never lost an AFC Champions League away game, they’ve yet to win a game anywhere. They met Esteghlal in last season’s tournament and played out two draws so it’s hardly a surprise that they played out a goalless stalemate at Azadi Stadium in Tehran today.
Group B
Al-Wehda 1–2 Bunyodkor
Al-Ittihad Jeddah 2-2 Zob Ahan
Luiz Felipe Scolari took Bunyodkor to UAE league leaders Al-Wehda looking for his side’s first AFC Champions League win in the country, and got it thanks to a brace from last year’s ACL sensation Denilson. The Brazilian struck his first just before the break and confirmed the three points when he reacted first to poke home the rebound from a Jasur Hasanov shot. Al Kathiri grabbed a consolation for Wheda in the final minute.
Elsewhere in Group B, Iranian club Zob Ahan crowned their first ACL clash with a Saudi side by coming back from two goals behind to grab a point. Goals from Abdelmalek Ziaya and captain Mohammed Noor had given the hosts a two goal cushion before Esmaeil Farhadi and Mohammad Ghazi grabbed a goal each in two second-half minutes shortly after the break.
Group E
Melbourne Victory 0-2 Seongnam Ilhwa
Kawasaki Frontale 1-3 Beijing Guoan
Reigning Australian champions Melbourne Victory continued their poor start to Asia’s premier club competition today, going down 2-0 at home to 2004 ACL runners-up Seongnam Ilhwa. Australian born defender Sasa Ognenovsk gave the Koreans a first-half lead before Yun Young-sun’s powerful header sealed all three points a few minutes from time.
Australian striker Joel Griffiths battled through massive snowfall to bag a brace for Beijing Guoan as they joined Seongnam at the summit of Group E this evening with their second successive win. The conditions were a brand new experience for Guoan coach Hong Yuanshuo who admitted, “We haven’t played in snow before,” while his Frontale coach Tsutomu Takahata moaned, “Because of the weather we lost our home advantage,” and he was probably right.
Group F
Changchun Yatai 9-0 Persipura
Jeonbuk FC 1-2 Kashima Antlers
Having gone down to 1-0 defeat at Kashima Antlers on matchday 1, Chinese club Changchun Yatai were eager to get their ACL campaign off and running today as they hosted reigning Indonesian Super League champions Persipura Jayapura; however, even the most optimistic of Yatai fans couldn’t have expected today’s nine goal demolition.
Following the final whistle, Changchun Yatai coach Shen Xiangfu admitted, “I told my players before the game that we are quite a bit superior to our Indonesian rivals,” and he wasn’t wrong. A Gao Jian brace and a Johnny Woodly Lambert strike sent Changchun into half-time 3-0 up before both went on to complete hat-tricks as the Chinese romped home by nine goals.
Group F’s other match wasn’t quite as one-sided with a Kashima Antlers fighting back from a goal down to steal a last-gasp victory in Jeonju. Brazilian Eninho had given Jeonbuk the lead a few minutes before half-time. However, Koji Nakata brought Kashima level before substitute Yasushi Endoh grabbed winner right at the death.
