UEFA president Michel Platini believes that the 2022 World Cup could help bring peace to the divided Korean peninsula.
The former French international was in Seoul on Monday and Tuesday on UEFA business to sign a sponsorship agreement between the confederation and Hyundai.
The European boss also held meetings with FIFA vice-president and former head of the Korean Football Association Chung Mong-joon.
“I have heard that Chung Mong-joon is working hard to bring the 2022 World Cup to Korea," Platini told a press conference at the National Football Center in Paju.
“If South Korea hosts the World Cup, it could make a positive contribution to peace on the Korean peninsula," he added.
Platini also met South Korean president Lee Myung-bak to talk about the 2022 tournament. While Europe expects to host the 2018 World Cup, South Korea is bidding for the 2022 event only, as are Qatar and Indonesia.
Elsewhere in Asia, Australia and Japan have thrown their hats into both rings and the United States are the only other non-European contender.
FIFA will announce the hosts of both 2018 and 2022 in December.
