'Technical problems' lead to cancellation...

After recently announcing their plans for two international friendlies against Yemen and Togo, scheduled for February 27 and March 3, 2010 respectively, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), made a complete U-turn in cancelling the match against the African nation, citing ‘technical’ problems.

According to general secretary, Azzuddin Ahmad, who spoke to local reporters, the friendly was forced to be cancelled due to insolvable technical reasons with only a week remaining to matchday. In fact, he said that the FAM would be taking a huge risk in continuing the match as scheduled.

He also added that FAM urged the Togolese Football Federation to send in the players list, but the side who have yet to play a single match this year since withdrawing from the African Cup of Nations under tragic circumstances that saw the death of three of their team members in an ambush attack on their team bus just before the tournament, failed to do so by the required deadline.

“We would not want to be tricked as how it happened last July during the build up to the Manchester United friendly, where Zimbabwe supposedly [knowingly] sent their league champions, Monomotapa United to face us, while misleading us to believe it was their national team," Azzuddin Ahmad said.

FAM were criticized severely by the local press and the general public in those incidents and it is only fair for them to take precautionary measures in this instance. However, Azzuddin also mentioned that they are trying to obtain a replacement to play K. Rajagobal’s team on that date.

“As of now, our hope is for Vietnam but we have yet to receive any confirmation from them.  At the same time, we’re also requesting FIFA match agents to help us. I’m confident we will play, though it may be an away match instead of being here [in Kuala Lumpur]," he said.

The friendly match against Yemen this Saturday will proceed as planned at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
