South Korea
defeated Iraq 2-1 on Saturday evening to warm-up for next Wednesday’s 2010
World Cup qualifier against North Korea.
The hosts controlled the game from start to finish at Suwon World Cup Stadium but they had to come from behind.
Much of the first half was spent in the Iraq half but goalkeeper Mohammed Kassid was in inspired form and when he wasn’t the woodwork came to the rescue of the Asian champions.
They still took a surprise lead eight minutes after the break as defender Hwang Jae-won headed a free-kick into his own net from close range.
Fortunately for the Pohang star, Kim Chi-woo equalized just a minute later, half-volleying home from the edge of the area after good work by Ki Sung-yung.
Ki was in the thick of the action with 20 minutes later when he was brought down in the box. Lee Keun-ho made no mistake from the spot.
