Fulham boss Martin Jol: No club has made an approach for Dempsey
The Dutch manager says the Cottagers remain hopeful of extending the US international's contract and talked down potential interest in his side's topscorer
Clint Dempsey's stock is high right now, but apparently not high enough to lure an approach to Fulham over the American attacker's rights.Fulham coach Martin Jol claims the London-based club hasn't received an offer for the 29-year-old, whose contract expires next summer. A contract extension is on the table, according to Jol.
"As you know, we talked to him and hopefully he will sign a contract to keep him here for the next three years," Jol said. "If not, he's still our player because there is no club that has made an approach for him."
Dempsey has scored 22 goals this season in all competitions, 16 in the Premier League, helping Fulham up to ninth.
The Texan's scintillating form hasn't gone unnoticed. Liverpool chairman Tom Werner told Goal.com that "any team would be lucky to have Clint Dempsey".
Jol took the comments merely as praise for his player and not anything more insidious.
"Of course it's nice if they are positive about him. I'm very positive about a few Liverpool players because I like them a lot but it doesn't mean we can afford to buy them," Jol said.
"If a manager does that, it's different because it's a tap-up, but if it's an owner, he probably doesn't know about the rules and agreements. I'm not bothered about it.''
Fulham takes on Sunderland on Sunday and will finish the season against Tottenham a week after that. Dempsey is tied for fourth in the Premier League scoring charts.
