Benfica Outcast Freddy Adu Not Retained By Sion After Trial Period - Report

USA international Freddy Adu’s career continues to drift after Sion decided not to retain his services, the AP reports.

Adu spent a week training with the Swiss club after returning to parent side Benfica following the end of his loan spell with Greek club Aris Thessaloniki. With the prospect of game-time with the Portuguese champions slim, he has sought out other potential destinations this summer but has yet to nail down a move, with Aris turning down the opportunity to sign the player on a permanent basis.

After 21-year-old Adu first hit the headlines when he signed for DC United as a 14-year-old, the American was tipped as one of the next greats of the world game. However, his career has since taken a sharp downward trajectory.

The Ghana-born player has three times been shipped out on loan since joining Benfica in 2007. During the 2008-09 season he played only nine times with Monaco in Ligue 1, while he spent the first half of 2009-10 at Belenenses before being released from the club in late December. Aris quickly snapped the attacker up, but he failed to shine in Greece too.
