By Zac Lee Rigg

After training with the club throughout preseason, Chivas USA signed Michael Umana, pending his receipt of a work visa.

The Costa Rican international previously played in Los Angeles for the Galaxy, but will now anchor the defense of city rivals Chivas USA.

"Michael has impressed us throughout preseason, and we're excited to have him join the team for 2010," said head coach Martín Vásquez. "He is a versatile, talented and experienced defender who is going to be an important part of our success this season."

The 27-year-old has 40 caps for Costa Rica, including three starts in the 2006 World Cup, when the Ticos fell out in the group stages.
