Eric Wynalda In Talks With Chicago Fire For Coaching Gig
Goal.com sources have revealed that the former U.S. international is in talks with the Chicago Fire for the vacant coaching gig.
Fire technical director Frank Klopas flew down to the LA area recently to meet with Wynalda. Klopas has interviewed several candidates in the search for Denis Hamlett's replacement. Two successive appearances in the Western Conference final wasn't enough to save Hamlett's job, as locker room disturbances and a lack of titles brought an end to his two year stint as the Fire head coach.
The appointment of Wynalda to the coaching gig would surely cause controversy. The former striker has built up quite the reputation over the years for not filtering himself. ESPN eventually fired him from a broadcast gig because of comments said about Jim Rome.
"Jim Rome can suck my dick! And he should be very afraid, because I'm the kind of guy, if I get too many drinks in me, I will club his ass," Wynalda said.
The 40-year-old now co-hosts Fox Football Fone-In. Though he lacks coaching experience, Wynalda was one of the pioneers of the sport in America. The first Yank to play in Germany's top division, Wynalda also racked up over 100 caps for the national team, scoring 34 goals along the way.
An official announcement declaring Chicago's next coach is expected shortly.
