The Spanish legend was a special guest at Saturday's Emir of Qatar cup final but his new club lost the decider and subsequently won't compete in continental competition next term
The former Real Madrid and Schalke striker, who had been confirmed by the current Asian champions as the club's newest signing on Saturday, was a special guest of the Doha outfit for the cup final.
The match ended goalless, before Al Gharafa keeper Qasem Burhan proved the hero with two penalty saves in the decisive shootout.
Al Sadd, who finished fourth in the 2011-12 Qatari Stars League, subsequently miss out on qualification for the 2013 ACL, while Al Gharafa, who ended the domestic season in sixth, will be part of the continental competition due to the cup triumph.
Al Gharafa boss Paulo Silas told reporters: “I thank the Gharafa management for all the support it gave me since the day I took over."
The success was seven-time league champions Al Gharafa's seventh Emir of Qatar Cup triumph.
