Iran Coach Afshin Ghotbi Not Targeting Qatar Tournament Win
The four-nation friendly tournament is not a priority...
Team Melli are heading to the Qatar Football Tournament to face the hosts as well as Mali and North Korea but Ghotbi is not too concerned about coming out on top.
Iran are preparing for a vital 2011 Asian Cup qualifier in Singapore on January 6 where a win will secure their spot in the quadrennial competition.
“Good teams such as North Korea and Mali will participate in the Qatar tourney and it is a good opportunity for us to play against them. However, we will not go to the event with the aim of winning the tournament,” Ghotbi said according to Mehr News Agency.
“Iran football team wants to win the 2011 Asian Cup. We have to think about the future. Iran will likely lose to its rivals sometimes, but we aim at winning the Asian Cup title,” he added.
The Qatar tournament takes place in Doha from December 27 to January 2.
