UAE: Al Shabab Play Down Emerson Links
UAE club Al Shabab have denied that they are interested in Emerson…
The Dubai team have dismissed rumours that they are after controversial Brazil-born Qatari striker, Marcio Emerson Passos.
Emerson, who scored 71 goals in 100 games in his spell with Urawa Red Diamonds of Japan, was recently released by Q-league powerhouse Al Sadd.
With Emerson supposedly close to Al Shabab coach Toninho Cerezo, it is no surprise that he has been linked with a move especially after a visit to the club earlier this week.
Team manager Obaid al Hubaitha, said it was a personal visit.
“There are a lot of rumours going around,” al Hubaitha told the Gulf News.
“Until now there has been no official contact. He is a friend of our Brazilian players and he stopped over to say hello to them on his way to Brazil.
“He is a good player and I am sure there is every chance that he might get an offer from the clubs here. Everybody knows him and every club would like to have a player like Emerson.
“But I repeat, he was just passing through and nothing officially has happened between us and him. So far, nobody has sat with him to talk about a deal. But there is a chance something will happen.
“It is still early, I believe, to decide for the next season,” said al Hubaitha. “But if he does come to our club, I think he will be a great addition.”
Coach Cerezo agreed when he said, “There is a long time till the next registration period.
“We are still awaiting a final decision on the new directors and board for the club. So things have to go step-by-step.”
Emerson was at the centre of an international storm last year.
The naturalised player appeared for Qatar in a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Iraq, despite being ineligible after playing for Brazil’s Under-20 team in 1999.
FIFA dismissed Iraq’s protest and the result was allowed to stand.
