Sompong Soleb set to be axed from Thailand national team after drunk driving incident
The team's trainer says he won't be selecting the attacker, who was found driving under the influence of alcohol just 24 hours after he was dropped for lack of fitness
By Ben Somerford
The War Elephants forward, who plays his club football for Buriram FC, pleaded guilty to a charge of drunk driving and being involved a hit-and-run collision, which occurred only 24 hours after he was dropped from the national team due to lack of fitness.
"He went out from the training camp without permission. He got drunk and caused damage to another person's property," Schafer told reporters.
"As a national team player, he should have set a good example for young players. Instead, he set a bad example. He betrayed the fans and the national team so he should no longer wear Thailand's jersey."
Soleb pleaded guilty in court on Wednesday and was handed a one-month jail term. He was also suspended for two years and fined 5,000 baht (€120).
Thailand are currently competing in the 41st King's Cup against South Korea's Olympic team along with Denmark and Norway.
